Sunsari Bazaar Shut to Protest Police Inaction

May 11, 2008

THT Online
Itahari, May 11

Locals shut Bhutaha bazaar of Sunsari district on Saturday alleging that police failed to take action against those involved in the killing of Madhesi Janaadhikar Forum cadre Ganga Das.
Some 600 locals, saying that the police administration was reduced to a mere spectator, gheraoed Bhutaha police post for two hours and closed the market till 3 pm, a member of struggle committee, Gannu Mukhiya, said.
Mukhiya said the agitators also staged demonstrations by burning tyres in Inaruwa, Ramnagar and Bhutaha. However, the bazaar reopened after SP Yadavraj Khanal called on representatives of the agitators for talks tomorrow, a local, Tabil Ansari, said.
Following the murder, the family of Das had filed an FIR claiming that Nepali Congress local leaders Gaftar Ansari, Tahir Ansari, Salin, Salim, Saroj, Dabud, Uttin and Alauddin Ansari were involved in the killing on the CA election day.
“The police administration can arrest them if it wants. But they are roaming freely,” Mukhiya said, claiming, “Police have not detained them citing the order from ‘higher authorities’ not to arrest them.”
The agitators have threatened to launch a stringent agitation if conclusion was not reached during tomorrow’s talks.
“The agitators have been called for talks tomorrow and I hope that the problem will be resolved,” SP Khanal said.

US Continues to Label Maoists as Terrorist Group

May 7, 2008

From reportersnepal

The United States has said that there was “no change” in the status of Nepal’s Maoists, who are currently listed in its terror watch list.

“I don’t think there’s any change. There’s no change in their status” US State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said in Washington. He was making this comment on the issue in the backdrop of a meeting between US envoy in Kathmandu Nancy Powell and Maoist leader Prachanda.
“There’s a particular listing. And I don’t have in front of me what exactly what it is, but at this point there’s no change,” he added.

Despite its victory in the recent election, the CPN- Maoist (CPN-M) is still demmed as a terrorist outfit by the US.

The US had listed the CPN (Maoist) as a terrorist organisation in 2004

MJF May Joing New Govt: Yadav

May 7, 2008

From Reportersnepal

Coordinator of Madhesi Janadhikar Forum (MJF), Upendra Yadav, has on Tuesday indicated that his party could be a part of the next government if it is formed garnering broader political consensus.

“The MJF will consider to join the government led by any party provided the party shows acumen in taking all major political forces into confidence,” he said while speaking at an interaction program held in the capital.

He also urged the parties to forge broad consensus prior to the first sitting of the Constituent Assembly, which is expected to formerly implement the agenda of republic, among others.

The MJF has emerged as the fourth largest party after the CA election by securing 52 seats.

It has been demanding amendment in the interim government to introduce the provision of simple majority of the CA to dislodge the Prime Minister. The existing constitutional provision requires two-thirds majority to remove the Prime Minister
